3D Dental Hospital Installation

The Brief

Glasgow Dental Hospital, which is part of Glasgow University, is leading the way in the techniques of delivering a modern day Dental Surgery teaching programme. Mediascape Ltd were previously involved in the refurbishment of teaching laboratories at the Glasgow Dental Hospital so we were pleased to be involved again, this time for the new Dorothy Geddes Multimedia Teaching Facility. The strong collaboration between the University and the NHS is continuing to facilitate exciting new developments and opportunities like this.

Challenges

The key requirement of the installation was to allow delivery of higher quality teaching which in turn allows better practice for patients. It will also help the University to maintain their current position on the Complete University Guide as top Dental School in the United Kingdom. The development of the multimedia facility has been divided in to two areas a master 2D area and a standalone or slave 2D/3D area which is the first of its kind for the University.

Solutions

The 3D/2D slave area system includes a Projection Design F35 AS3D Active 3D projector, fixed frame screen and 15 pairs of DLP link 3D glasses which have shelf mounted docks for charging and storage. Using DLP link Technology allows the screen to act as the emitter to the glasses and the120 Hz video signal is driven from a custom specified Dell T7500 workstation with NVidia Quadro 6000 graphics card so that any 3D content can be rendered and displayed easily.

Also included in the 3D/2D slave half mounted on the lectern is a 120Hz preview monitor so that 120Hz signals can be viewed locally before going to the main projector. Both areas have full audio systems supporting a variety of audio sources from lectern gooseneck microphones, radio microphones both handheld and tie clip laptop and PC all selected at a press of a button on the AMX control system.

The master 2D area has the ability to feed information to two ceiling mounted overflow monitors that provide the teaching space with a flexible seating arrangement and this also can mirror onto the slave 2D/3D area.

Both areas have AMX automated control systems so that the presenter can control the equipment within the chosen area or overflow from the master half to the slave half at the press of a button.

A similar project was also undertaken at the University of Dundee’s dental teaching suite. This type of systems can now allow for teaching staff and students to begin a new era of learning.
